PERTH, Australia, Sept. 19 (UPI) -- Jack Cooksey's elation at being the first iPhone 6 buyer in Perth, Australia, was momentarily smashed when he dropped his brand new device on the ground on live television.

Cooksey was the first of hundreds who waited in line overnight to get their hands on Apple's newest devices at the Hay Street store in downtown Perth. So excited to show off his new prize, he pulled the iPhone 6 out of its box -- and it immediately smacked to the concrete sidewalk.

"I dropped it in a panic to get it open," Cooksey told 9 News, whose reporters had been interviewing him.

But while the tech reviewers conducting the first official drop tests on the iPhone 6 and its bigger brother, the iPhone 6 Plus, found the phones "took a beating," Cooksey's phone was just fine.

"Luckily it's covered in plastic, so it's fine," he said.

The fortunate techie said he's looking forward to a do over.

"I just can't wait to open it again -- and not drop it," he said.
