Iran blase over P5-plus-1 talks

TEHRAN, Feb. 18 (UPI) -- Iranian officials meeting Tuesday in Vienna aren't expecting any major breakthroughs on nuclear talks, a spokeswoman for the Iranian Foreign Ministry said.

Members of the P5-plus-1 -- Britain, China, France, Russia and the United States, plus Germany -- met with their Iranian counterparts in Vienna to discuss Iran's nuclear program.

Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesman Marziyeh Afkham said representatives from Tehran were eager to continue the talks, but didn't expect any major developments.

"We do not expect results from this or next round of the talks," she was quoted by the semiofficial Fars News Agency as saying.

Iran secured modest relief from sanctions under a six-month interim agreement reached in November. In exchange, Iran agreed to curb some of its nuclear research activity.

Iran is suspected of pursuing technology needed to manufacture a nuclear weapon. Iran denies the allegations, though the International Atomic Energy Agency said recently it was asking for more information about research into a detonation trigger used in nuclear weapons.

The U.S. State Department said Monday it wasn't clear if all parties to the negotiations would be able to reach a final agreement at the end of the six-month framework, "though we aim to."
