Hate mail over surprise Sochi selection puts Wagner off social media

KANSAS CITY, Mo., Jan. 15 (UPI) -- A U.S. figure skater says she has temporarily sworn off social media after her surprise selection to go to the Sochi Winter Olympics stirred up hate messages.

Ashley Wagner got the third spot on the U.S. team even though she fell twice and came in fourth at the U.S. national championships during the weekend, the Kansas City (Mo.) Star reported Wednesday.

Mirai Nagasu, who placed third, wasn't named to the team. Her fans went to Twitter to complain that the national championships are traditionally used to select the Olympic team. Some of the comments didn't exactly send congratulations Wagner's way.

After seeing some of the comments, Wagner told People magazine she had "officially decided to give up social media" until the Games were concluded.

"Twitter is a blessing and a curse at the same time," she said. "It's tough to filter out the good things that you hear [from] the awful things that people will write, so I'm going cold turkey."

U.S. skating officials said Wagner was selected based on her wins at international competitions in recent years.

Pat St. Peter, president of the U.S. Figure Skating Association, said Wagner had the "top credentials of any of our female athletes."
