The FBI said laser reports are up 17 percent from 2012 and pose a significant security risk for pilots who can be blinded in the final moments of landing a plane, WPIX-TV, New York, reported Saturday.
The two most recent incidents were reported the evening of Oct. 15, when pilots about 2,000 feet above the ground on final approach reported their cockpits were illuminated with green laser light. One said the light source was in the Bronx, the other said it was in Queens, investigators said.
Laser targeting has not caused any airplanes to crash but pilots have suffered eye injuries including retina burns as a result, the FBI said.
