Samsung confirms 'mini' version of its flagship Galaxy S4 phone coming

SEOUL, May 30 (UPI) -- A slimmed-down version of Samsung's flagship Galaxy S4 smartphone is on its way, the South Korean smartphone maker confirmed Thursday.

Following leaks that spawned a raft of rumors, Samsung confirmed it would unveil a mini version of the S4 June 20 at an event in London, CNN reported.

Analysts suggested the main target of the S4 mini would be the iPhone of rival Apple and that the mini would be closer to the iPhone in size and easier to hold than its larger cousins, the S4 and the Galaxy Note II.

"Samsung's overall smartphone strategy is about producing scores of iterations at various price points and screen sizes in order to saturate the market with as much of its hardware as possible," Natasha Lomas wrote for TechCrunch.

In screen size and weight -- 4.3-inch display, 3.77 ounces -- the mini will be comparable to the iPhone 5's 4-inch screen and 3.95-ounce weight.

"We want to give people more choices with Galaxy S4 mini, similar look and feel of Galaxy S4 for more compact and practical uses," J.K. Shin, president of Samsung's mobile division, said in a blog post.

The Galaxy S4 has a 5-inch screen, while Samsung's Galaxy Note II "phablet" is a handful with its 5.5-inch screen.

Samsung said the S4 mini would be available in either white or black but didn't announce a price or release date.
