Girl died in kidnapping, fake 'rescue' attempt, police say

ORONO, Maine, May 30 (UPI) -- A 20-year-old Maine man enticed a teenage girl into a meeting so he could kidnap her and become a hero after later pretending to rescue her, police say.

However, the teen, Nichole Cable, 15, died during the kidnapping from unknown causes, the Portland (Maine) Press Herald reported Thursday.

The alleged scheme by Kyle Dube of Orono, Maine, was outlined in a police affidavit released by a judge Wednesday after Dube was indicted on charges of kidnapping and murder.

The affidavit said Cable agreed to meet Dube outside her home in Glenburn, Maine, the night of May 12, believing him to be a friend named Bryan Butterfield. Wearing a ski mask, Dube jumped out of bushes, tied Cable with duct tape and put her in his father's truck. When he went to get her out of the truck, she was dead.

Cable's mother reported her daughter missing the next day. The teen's body was found May 20 in woods outside Orono.

Dube was arrested the next day.

Police reported Dube had communicated with Cable through a Facebook page he had set up under the name Bryan Butterfield. The account was traced to the home where Dube lived with his parents.

The real Butterfield, who lives in Bangor, Maine, said he knew Cable, but hadn't seen the girl in several months.

In the affidavit, police said Butterfield told them he suspected Dube created the fake account because "Kyle wanted to have sex with Nichole but that she has refused his advances," the Bangor Daily News reported.

An autopsy hasn't yet determined how Cable died.
