YouTube feature maps videos by popularity across the U.S.

MOUNTAIN VIEW, Calif., May 8 (UPI) -- YouTube says a new feature lets U.S. users see what videos others are watching in major cities or regions of the country and know their sex and age group.

The YouTube Trends Map is an interactive graphic map of the United States that displays which videos are the most popular in major markets nationwide, technewsworld.com reported Wednesday.

The feature can provide statistics for videos that get both the most views and the most shares overall throughout the country, and can also offer up demographic information such as gender and age group.

A user can hover their cursor over a selected city or region to find out the top three videos in that area, YouTube said.

The map provides a sense of discovery for users, Greg Sterling, founder of Sterling Market Intelligence, said.

"Top or trending videos have been a feature of the YouTube experience in various forms for years," he said. "However, this map presents that data in a new way that will enable some people to discover videos they weren't already aware of."
