In a survey of 1,200 people by airline comparison website Skyscanner, just 6 percent of respondents said they send the traditional cards to friends and family when traveling, compared with 25 percent who use Facebook and 10 percent who call home using the video messaging service Skype, The Daily Telegraph reported Wednesday.
Postcards did, however, manage to edge out Twitter; just 2 percent of the microblogging service's British users said they posted updates while abroad.
An unexpected finding of the survey was that a full 20 percent preferred to remain out of touch, not conducting any communication at all with friends and family at home.
"Social networks have transformed the way we communicate with the world," a Skyscanner spokeswoman said. "They have now firmly replaced the postcard as the most popular way to stay in touch with those at home and to share our holiday experiences."
