Yahoo! debuts re-designed home page

SUNNYVALE, Calif., Feb. 20 (UPI) -- Yahoo! has introduced a new home page, a redesign aimed at luring back users the search engine has lost to competitors in recent years.

Simplified and intended to be more personal, the home page focuses on users' interests and preferences, and displays a constantly updated news feed users can customize based on their interests, USA Today reported Wednesday.

It represents the first major redesign of the site under Yahoo! head Marissa Mayer, who came to Yahoo! from Google in 2012.

Popular items from the Web selected by Yahoo! and a list of trending Web searches appear at the top of the home page, along with local weather forecast and Facebook friends' birthdays.

Yahoo! says the site will now load faster and has been "optimized" for smartphones and tablets.

Following Wednesday's debut, new features will be added in the coming weeks, Yahoo! said.
