SEOUL, Jan. 14 (UPI) -- Samsung says it has sold more than 100 million of its Galaxy S line of smartphones since the models were launched in 2010.

The tally of Galaxy S, S II and S III phones comes amid suggestions the iPhone 5 from rival Apple is meeting with sluggish demand, the Los Angeles Times reported Monday.

The Wall Street Journal has reported Apple significantly cut back on orders for various components intended for iPhone 5 production, such as its display screens, in the current quarter.

Samsung's Galaxy S models, all running Google's Android operating system, have proved to be the most popular brand of smartphone and have propelled Samsung ahead of Nokia as the top cellphone manufacturer in 2012.

More than 25 million Galaxy S smartphones, 40 million Galaxy S II devices and 41 million examples of the current flagship Galaxy S III phone have been sold, Samsung said.

A new member of the Galaxy S family of smartphones is expected sometime in the first half of this year, the Times said.
