BOLOGNA, Italy, Sept. 12 (UPI) -- Skeletons discovered near Bologna, Italy, believed to be those of World War II soldiers, actually date from the Middle Ages, researchers said.

Investigators from the University of Bologna and the Environmental Archaeological Museum of Persiceto, Italy, examined 32 boxes of remains found in the nearby town of San Giovanni, and using carbon-dating techniques at the University of Salerno's Center for Dating and Diagnostics, determined they were from a period between 890 and 1160 A.D., the Italian news agency ANSA reported Wednesday.

It had been thought the skeletons, discovered in 1962, may have belonged to a group believed to have been killed at the end of World War II, in an incident in which a busload of former soldiers disappeared after leaving the city of Brescia, the news agency said.
