PORT WASHINGTON, N.Y., June 28 (UPI) -- The number of people using their tablet computers to watch television programming has more than doubled in the last year, a U.S. market research company says.

Consumer surveys conducted by the New York-based NPD DisplaySearch in 14 regions around the globe found 10 percent of consumers saying they used their iPad or Android-based tablet to watch video, up from 4 percent a year ago, PaidContent.org reported Wednesday.

The survey of around 14,000 TV owners worldwide found watching video on tablets is particularly high in urban China, where nearly 35 percent of respondents say they use the devices to view television content.

The survey showed the fastest growing region is Turkey, where tablet-viewing behavior jumped to 16.5 percent from 3.1 percent in just one year, NPD said.

Overall, it said, 70 percent of survey respondents said they've watched TV on a device other than a television.
