Woman charged in ID theft tax scam

MIAMI, Feb. 11 (UPI) -- A Miami woman is accused of stealing identities and filing fake tax returns to try to trick the Internal Revenue Service into sending her thousands of dollars.

Dorothy Boulin, 29, was charged Friday with using an electronic IRS number normally issued to legitimate tax preparers to file the fake returns in the names of U.S. Marines, including one now serving in Afghanistan, and others, The Miami Herald reported.

The FBI infiltrated Boulin's operation by relying on a confidential informant who pretended to do the tax returns with her within the past month, a criminal complaint said.

Authorities allege Boulin provided the informant with more than 100 photocopies of stolen driver's licenses and Social Security cards, along with printouts of more than 200 names, birth dates and Social Security numbers.

The complaint said Boulin expected to be paid 20 percent of the money the informant would receive by filing the fake returns with a tax software program.
