UNTERSCHLEISSHEIM, Germany, Jan. 30 (UPI) -- A new jamming device for vehicles to protect against improvised explosive devices detonated by radio signals has been developed in Germany.
Cassidian says its jammer, using digital receiver and processing technologies, detects and classifies radio signals intended to trigger the IED and then transmits its own signal, which matches the frequency band of the detonation signal.
The jammer's reaction time is less than a microsecond, Cassidian said.
"Lessons learned in recent conflicts prove that radio-controlled explosive devices remain one of the major threats in asymmetric scenarios," said Elmar Compans, head of Sensors and Electronic Warfare at Cassidian.
"Progress in digital technology now gives us the means to counter this threat by far more effectively than hitherto possible."
Preparations for production of the jammer began in December but no details were given by the company as to when manufacturing of the units would begin.
Cassidian is the defense and security subsidiary of EADS.
