UNIDO talks energy with Chinese officials

BEIJING, Nov. 13 (UPI) -- All new energy generation in China should be clean energy by 2050, the secretary-general of the U.N. Industrial Development Organization said in Beijing.

UNIDO Secretary-General Kandeh Yumkella submitted a report to the Chinese government outlining a series of steps Beijing needs to take to meet its target for greenhouse gas emissions.

"If China is to meet the target of year-on-year emissions cuts of between 4 and 5 percent, it will need to reduce energy intensity by between 75 and 85 percent by 2050," he said.

He added that Beijing needs to meet half of its energy needs using low-carbon technology by 2030 and employ clean energy for all of its new energy by 2050.

The secretary-general called on Beijing to tax companies that emit carbon dioxide and other pollutants as well.

A UNIDO council plans to provide Beijing with information on green industrial technology and how to promote energy efficiency.

Yumkella is in Beijing on a three-day working meeting to promote environmental protection and sustainable energy usage.
