NAVI MUMBAI, India, Nov. 10 (UPI) -- India's Reliance Industries Ltd. announced the first oil discovery in an onshore block located in the Cambay basin near the Gulf of Khambhat.

RIL said the oil discovery lies in an exploratory block about 80 miles from the city of Ahmedabad in the Cambay basin.

The company said the block covers an area of 245 square miles divided into a 220 square-mile section and a 25 square-mile section.

RIL said it has drilled five wells in the block with the oil discovery located in the fifth well. The well was drilled to 4,760 feet in the larger section of the block to explore the play in the Miocene Basal Sand of the Babaguru formation.

The thickness of the oil reservoir was 49 feet and it produced an initial flow rate of 500 barrels of oil per day.

RIL said it has notified the Indian government of the new discovery. Further analysis will determine the commercial prospects for the well.
