IRVING, Texas, Nov. 3 (UPI) -- Texas-based engineering company Fluor Corp. announced Tuesday it was awarded a contract to develop the Bergermeer gas storage project in the Netherlands.
Fluor said it was awarded the engineering, procurement and construction management services contract from TAQA Energy B.V., a subsidiary of the Abu Dhabi National Energy Co.
"Fluor will assist TAQA in its ambition to provide Europe with energy security through this strategically important underground gas storage project," said Peter Oosterveer, president of Fluor's Energy & Chemicals Group.
The company said it would move forward with a design plan that minimizes hydrocarbon and carbon dioxide emissions.
Engineering and design work began in August. The company is tasked with the engineering and management of the gas compression and treatment facility at the Bergermeer site in the North Holland province of the Netherlands.
Fluor expects its participation in the Bergermeer site to conclude by 2013.
