VIENNA, Nov. 2 (UPI) -- Austrian energy giant OMV announced Monday it discovered gas and oil at its first deepwater exploration in a region west of the Shetland Islands.

OMV through its subsidiary OMV (UK) Ltd. announced the discovery of gas and oil in the Tornado well. The well reached a total depth of 8,655 feet.

Helmut Langanger, the OMV executive board member charged with exploration and production, expressed his pleasure with the success of the first deepwater well in the region.

"This proves that OMV can perform exploration operations also in challenging offshore areas," he said.

The company said the discovery at the Tornado well follows a two-year drilling and exploration campaign in the Atlantic. The region includes the Rosebank and Cambo discoveries, which OMV considers "good candidates for development."

OMV is a partner in the Tornado well with Dana Petroleum and other regional interests. Data from the Tornado discovery is under review to determine its commercial viability.
