WASHINGTON, Nov. 2 (UPI) -- French nuclear energy company EDF announced the approval of its partnership with Constellation Energy to explore nuclear power in Maryland.

EDF said it welcomed a decision by the board of directors at Constellation Energy to move forward with plans to develop nuclear power under the terms outlined by the Maryland Public Service Commission.

The company said it was "eager" to place Maryland at the center of its nuclear work in the United States. EDF said it intends to establish its U.S. headquarters in Maryland.

"EDF looks forward to operating and developing nuclear power plants in the U.S., where the group is already active in the development of renewable energy, trading, and the nuclear renaissance," said Pierre Gadonneix, chairman and chief executive officer at EDF.

The approval means EDF and Constellation Energy have the necessary state and federal endorsements to proceed with the transaction to establish a joint venture for the nuclear work.

EDF said the Maryland Public Service Commission set certain conditions on the partnership that maintain the independence and financial durability of Constellation Energy.
