India debates wind feed-in tariff

NEW DELHI, Nov. 28 (UPI) -- In order to increase its wind power, India is considering a transmission tariff mechanism.

By setting uniform grid connectivity standards and putting in place renewable energy credits, the government will be able to help increase the growth of the renewable energy sector, said R.N. Nayak, executive director of the Power Grid Corp. of India.

Putting in place new incentives for renewable energy would help the industry expand and grow and evolve. With more money the industry could address the issue of wind power's unpredictability and how best to store wind, solar and other renewable power.

Nayak also supports a proposed law that would create a national renewable energy council, building on the Ministry of New and Renewable Energy.

The council would be tasked with promoting grid connection, biofuels and transportation through mandates.
