Toshiba to refurbish French nuclear plants

TOKYO, Oct. 24 (UPI) -- Japan's Toshiba Corp. announced it has been chosen to help refurbish French nuclear plants.

Toshiba will work with a subsidiary of U.S.-based Westinghouse Electric Co. to repair and maintain several nuclear plants in France operated by Electricite de France.

According to the deal, the contract will last for 10 years and is worth about $200 million. Toshiba, in its first nuclear-related deal with France, and Westinghouse will renew stator coils at the nuclear plants.

Toshiba will start producing replacement stator coils at its plant in Yokohama, southwest of Tokyo, in the spring of 2009, and Westinghouse will be in charge of the installation.
