WASHINGTON, Oct. 23 (UPI) -- The U.S. wind energy industry installed 1,389 megawatts this quarter, bringing the total to 4,204 megawatts.

The American Wind Energy Association is projecting it will be another record year for wind project installation.

The industry is on track to surpass 2007, when 5,249 megawatts were installed, with a total of about 7,500 megawatts this year. That is enough power to provide electricity to an estimated 2.2 million homes.

AWEA is also estimating the share of domestic wind turbines has risen from about 30 percent in 2005 to 50 percent currently.

Among the wind leaders in the world, Texas now generates 6 gigawatts, placing it just below Germany, India and Spain.
