ROUND ROCK, Texas, Sept. 26 (UPI) -- U.S.-based Dell has announced it will use energy-efficient screens in all of its new laptops.
The company said all its new laptops will have mercury-free light-emitting diode backlights. The transition will be made over the next 12 months.
Dell officials said the move is in line with its goal to become the greenest technology company on the planet. Its customers want things that way, said Jeff Clarke, senior vice president of Dell Product Group.
The first laptops to have the new, more energy-efficient screens will be the Latitude E4200, E4300, E6400, E6400 ATG and E6500. The Dell Precision M2400 and M4400 mobile work stations also will be shipped out with LED backlighting as a standard display.
Dell's computers will now be mercury-free and highly recyclable. The 15-inch LED displays reportedly consume an average of 43 percent less power at maximum brightness than traditional screens.
