PARIS, Sept. 5 (UPI) -- For the first time, the Paris-based International Energy Agency endorsed the European Energy Policy.

Following its first in-depth analysis of the European Energy Policy, the IEA endorsed the European Commission's energy proposals as the proposals are currently being discussed by the commission, the European Parliament and member states.

European Commission President Jose Barroso said he was pleased with the IEA's report and endorsement. The IEA was particularly pleased with the EU goals regarding alternative and renewable energy and emissions reductions.

"The IEA review of EU energy policy is a highly visible and politically important exercise that is very useful for the Commission," EU Energy Commissioner Andris Piebalgs said in a statement. "It shows clearly that the EU is now recognized as a single entity in energy matters."
