New York Mayor Bloomberg promotes wind

NEW YORK, Aug. 20 (UPI) -- New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg wants wind to power his city.

The mayor announced he wants to install small, urban wind turbines on the city's bridges and skyscrapers and offshore as well, as part of a push to develop renewable energy, the Star Ledger reported.

Bloomberg discussed his renewable energy plans at the National Clean Energy Summit in Las Vegas. His plan includes asking private companies and investors to study how windmills can be built across the city.

In the last several years, the city has experienced power outages and blackouts that the mayor hopes to prevent in the future. Already cities in Europe, including some in England, promote the use of small turbine domestic wind power.

Bloomberg has not yet specified which buildings and bridges would receive the turbines, but he wants to work with property owners to identify potential sites.
