Small hydro plants planned for Vietnam

HANOI, Vietnam, Aug. 19 (UPI) -- Vietnam's Central Highlands will be the largest hydropower plant center in the country.

There are a series of hydropower plants being built in the area, and by 2010 they are projected to have a 5,000-megawatt power capacity. That's about one-third of the country's entire current power supply, VNA reported.

According to a report by the Central Highlands Steering Board, provinces in the Central Highlands are building hydropower plants on the region's Serepok, Se San and Dong Nai rivers.

Six projects with a combined capacity of 750 megawatts are planned in the Serepok River in Dac Lac province, and five are already under way.

In Dac Lac province, 100 sites have been zoned for hydropower plants, and 29 of them are under construction, according to VNA and the steering board.
