IBM expands green options

ARMONK, N.Y., June 12 (UPI) -- U.S.-based IBM is helping with energy efficiency.

The company announced a new modular data center that mimics the power and energy efficiency of IBM's computing hubs and can reduce energy costs by up to 50 percent.

IBM says it designed the data center as part of its Project Big Green, the Environmental Leader reported.

IBM said the data centers are designed to power businesses ranging from large enterprises to small organizations to help them meet Green Grid's ratings for energy leadership.

The Enterprise Modular Data Center, the Portable Modular Data Center and the High Density Zone data center are miniature versions of IBM's data centers.

In addition to more energy-efficient data center options, IBM has developed water-cooled computer chips that could help cut energy use in the future as well as new software for the IBM that can improve the flexibility and responsiveness of IT infrastructures and reduce requirements for additional physical storage hardware systems.
