BAKU, Azerbaijan, May 21 (UPI) -- Turkmenistan and Azerbaijan will make the fuel and energy sector a primary focus of bilateral relations, the president of Turkmenistan said Tuesday.

President Gurbanguly Berdymukhamedov said the energy sector will become part of the strategic direction between the neighboring countries.

Berdymukhamedov said the focus of his country would be improving the transportation infrastructure, the Trend Capital News Agency reported.

"One of the important spheres of mutual cooperation is transport," the president said.

Turkmenistan, along with its partners in Iran and Kazakhstan, is working to set up a North-South transportation corridor for Central Asian nations.

The president made his remarks in the Azerbaijan capital, Baku, which will host an "Oil and Gas of Turkmenistan and Azerbaijan" conference in September.
