Russia to build Kola Peninsula wind farm

MURMANSK , Russia, April 10 (UPI) -- Russia's Kola Peninsula will soon have its first wind farm.

Government officials and leaders from Dutch Windlife Energy announced plans to set up the first wind farm in the region.

A memorandum of understanding was signed by murmansk Region Gov. Yury Yevdokimov and the head of Wildlife Energy, the Moscow Daily News Bulletin reported.

During the first stage the project, about 200 megawatts of capacity will be constructed. There are tentative plans for at least two other phases to follow.

Windlife Energy will likely be an investor in the project as well as a participant in the construction. A separate company will be established to take the position of project operator.

A more specific location will be specified in the near future and plans are to begin laying the foundation in 2009.
