Tata Power plans to enter nuke sector

NEW DELHI, Aug. 9 (UPI) -- India’s Tata Power Co. says it plans to enter the nuclear power arena if it gets government approval.

Tata Chairman Ratan Tata said the company had aligned with "some major nuclear equipment suppliers and is ready to apply to the government to seek permission to enter into country’s nuclear energy sector."

He said Tata Consulting Engineers would also be associated with the nuclear sector and Tata Power could partner with Areva of France for the projects. He was addressing the annual general body meeting of the company.

He said by 2012 Tata Power would produce 10,000 megawatt of power.

“In the wind sector too, the company plans to add another 40 MW and expand its footprint to states like Karnataka and Gujarat."

Tata Power has two wind farms in Maharashtra, with a combined capacity of 45.1 MW. He said Tata Steel was keen to invest in Bangladesh, but the projects were in limbo.
