Russia: Nuke fuel attacks are neo-Nazi

ANGARSK, Russia, July 24 (UPI) -- The Russian government is blaming an attack on protesters against a nuclear fuel processing plant on neo-Nazis.

A camp in southeast Siberia where opponents of the Angarsk Electrolysis Chemical Plant were gathered came under attack by a local fascist group, police said Tuesday.

RIA Novosti reports one person was killed and seven hurt in the Saturday attack. Police arrested 20 suspects. The incident is being looked at as "intentional grievous bodily harm resulting in death."

The perpetrators allegedly donned face masks and used metal rods and baseball bats in the Angarsk camp, near Lake Baikal.

The plant reprocesses uranium for use in nuclear energy and is to be developed by Russia to become an international uranium processing plant.

World Nuclear News, the news division of the World Nuclear Association, reports Russia intends to quadruple the Angarsk plant's capacity by 2015.

Kazakhstan owns a 10-percent stake in the International Center for Uranium Enrichment. In a separate joint venture at the Angarsk site, Russia will process Kazakh uranium.
