FRESNO, Calif., April 12 (UPI) -- The California Air National Guard armory base in Fresno will be powered by solar energy.

Akeena Solar announced Wednesday it, along with MCC Construction, has been hired to install the system. Akeena is the largest installer of residential solar systems in the state.

"We are thrilled to be showcasing Akeena's design and integration talents in the Central Valley of California," said Barry Cinnamon, chief executive officer of Akeena.

The multimillion-dollar project will be completed in two phases and is expected to produce enough electricity to power more than 100 homes.

"The hot climate and high electricity rates have been the driving force behind the astounding growth for the solar power industry in this region. We are happy to work with the California Air National Guard base to produce clean renewable power while helping the base to save money," Cinnamon said.

The U.S. military is one of the largest energy and fuel purchasers in the nation. The U.S. Air Force leads the military in investment and use of renewable energy and alternative fuels.
