Wind to hydrogen fueled engine is tested

TORONTO, April 5 (UPI) -- Hydrogen Engine Center demonstrated its wind-hydrogen hybrid generator system Thursday in Toronto and called the test a success.

The generating system uses hydrogen for fuel and is part of a more advanced wind-hydrogen project.

"The deployment of our near-zero emissions, hydrogen-fueled 4 (plus) 1T power generator system is an important step toward the implementation of large scale development of reliable renewable energy sources," said Ted Hollinger, chief executive officer of HEC Inc. "HEC is working to deliver our environmentally friendly power generating products to the rapidly expanding alternative fuel wind power market today."

During periods of high wind, the hydrogen fuel is produced by water electrolysis and stored so even when winds are not prevalent, there's fuel stored.

"Our technology is designed to help make wind power a more reliable, affordable and scalable power generating solution and thereby expand the penetration of wind power in energy markets," said Tapan Bose, president of Hydrogen Engine Center Canada Inc.

The system will be used as part of a wind-farm project under way in Newfoundland. The system is intended to increase the uses for wind energy.
