A 3D printer large enough to build a house

The printer moves on two rails and can build the outer structure of a house after which humans can install the doors and windows.

Researchers at the University of Southern California are building a large 3D printer that can build a house in 24 hours and comes equipped with nozzle that can pour out concrete.

The concept is known as contour crafting and will build a house based on a set computer pattern. After laying down two rails for the printer to move on, the system would move along the rails laying down concrete for the structure, after which humans will be needed to hang door and install the interiors.

Researchers feel that contour crafting could reduce the cost of owning a home and make it easier to repair after natural disasters. Professor Behrokh Khoshnevis believes that the printer won't eliminate construction jobs but will actually create more.
