Coca-Cola is fighting back against claims that the sugar substitutes the company uses to sweeten their diet drinks are not safe.
In an ad posted to Twitter by Beverage Digest, the soda giant defended its use of low- and no-calorie sweeteners.
"Our use of high-quality, low- and no- calorie sweeteners, including aspartame, allows us to give people great-tasting options they can feel good about," Coca-Cola claimed in the ad. "Time and again, these low- and no-calorie sweeteners have shown to be safe, high-quality alternatives to sugar.
The company particularly defended its use of aspartame -- composed of aspartic acid and phenylalanine -- claiming its safety was "supported by more than 200 studies over the last 40 years."
This is Coca-Cola's first ad defending the use of artificial sweeteners. The commercial is part of a campaign launched by the company in January to combat claims that its products contributed to obesity in society.
