NASA joins Tumblr, starts multiple blogs

WASHINGTON, Aug. 7 (UPI) -- Already one of the most public-facing and media-literate government agencies, NASA is now expanding their public outreach to a new platform: Tumblr.

Add that to their work on Facebook, Instagram, YouTube, Vine, NASA TV and on their own array of websites and you've got a virtual powerhouse of engagement.

NASA says its curators will use Tumblr's micro-blog format to offer an array of photos, video and text -- as one typically does on a blog. The agency says its postings will focus on their "missions of exploration and discovery."

But NASA isn't just settling for one official account. Accompanying the main account will be one run by astronaut Peggy Whitson. Whitson will document her training as she prepares for a six-month stay on the International Space Station.

These two accounts will be joined by two mission-focused accounts. The JunoCam Tumblr will regularly post photos of Jupiter -- snapped by both NASA's Juno mission and amateur astronomers. And the Curiosity rover will get its own account, offering the mission another place to publish all its Martian selfies.

"The agency continues to add new platforms like Tumblr to offer the public a comprehensive view of NASA's missions, facilities and people," officials wrote in a press release.
