"The space agency studies no planet more closely than our own," NASA said.

WASHINGTON, May 23 (UPI) -- NASA has posted the 3.2 gigapixel mosaic of planet Earth promised more than a month ago. The zoomable photo of the globe is stitched together with 36,422 selfies snapped by citizens all across the world.

In late April, to celebrate Earth Day, NASA requested that people take selfies and post them to social media with the hashtag #GlobalSelfie. The interactive image above is the result, thanks to the hard work of the data scientists, computer engineers, and graphic designers at NASA.

The photo features images of people on every continent and 113 different countries. "From Antarctica to Yemen, Greenland to Guatemala, Micronesia to the Maldives, Pakistan, Poland, Peru," NASA bragged in a press release.

Touting their commitment to the mother planet, NASA said that "the space agency studies no planet more closely than our own."

"With 17 Earth-observing satellites in orbit, bolstered by ambitious airborne and ground-based observation campaigns," America's space agency added, "NASA data helps scientists piece together a clearer picture of Earth's atmosphere, land and ocean."
