Quantum entanglement, a phenomenon which has perplexed physicists, is when the behavior of individual particles is dependent on the other particles in the group. If a pair of particles are entangled, then the spin of one particle will oppose the spin of the other.
This phenomenon holds true no matter how far apart the particles are -- across a room or across galaxies the behavior of one particle will affect the other's behavior.
Researchers now suggest the characteristics of a wormhole, a hypothetical features of space-time popular in science fiction, are the same as if two particles were entangled and pulled away from each other, meaning that black holes on opposite sides of the universe could be linked with a wormhole.
But Andreas Karch, a professor at University of Washington, said that even with this connection two people at each black hole would not be able to communicate or travel cross the wormhole.
“The way you can communicate with each other is if you jump into your black hole, then the other person must jump into his black hole, and the interior world would be the same,” he said.
