GREENBELT, Md., Dec. 13 (UPI) -- An Earth observation satellite has captured an image of an erupting volcano on Russia's Kamchatka Peninsula active after 36 years of dormancy, NASA reported.

The Tolbachik Volcano began erupting in late November, and the Earth-observing EO-1 satellite captured two views of the volcano Dec. 1, a NASA release reported Thursday.

In addition to a natural-color image, EO-1 created a second image by combining visible and infrared light.

Both images show volcanic plumes and a lava flow from Tolbachik, which is a shield volcano -- a low-profile, broad structure with a shape resembling an ancient warrior shield.

Multiple volcanic cones litter the surface of Tolbachik, and the November activity has been concentrated around one on the southern flank of the volcano, NASA said.
