Russian media websites in hack attacks

MOSCOW, Nov. 8 (UPI) -- The websites of some of Russia's major media outlets were subjected to "targeted attacks" by hackers, security experts said.

Russia's Kaspersky Lab anti-virus software firm said Thursday it had detected an attack in late October on the websites of Vesti TV, Interfax news agency, Gazeta.ru, Vzglyad and Ura.ru online publications.

Kaspersky Lab said the attacks lasted 30 to 90 minutes each day and were designed to steal server passwords, RIA Novosti reported.

All of the targeted websites have taken appropriate security action in the wake of the hacks, the lab said.

The software firm said there were similar attacks on media websites in March and in November 2011.

Kaspersky Lab announced in mid-October it is developing a new operating system for industrial users to protect them from malware attacks and hacks.
