WASHINGTON, Oct. 15 (UPI) -- September tied for the world's warmest September since weather record keeping began in the United States and globally in 1880, meteorologists said.

Scientists from the National Oceanographic and Atmospheric Administration said the average global temperature in September was 60.21 degrees Fahrenheit, or 1.21 degrees F above the 20th-century average, USA Today reported Monday.

September was the 331st month in a row with a global temperature above the 20th-century average, scientists said, with most regions of the word recording higher-than-average monthly temperatures.

The included central Russia, Japan, western Australia, northern Argentina, Paraguay, western Canada and southern Greenland.

The United States escaped much of the record September heat, and the month was just the 23rd warmest in U.S. records.

However, for the year overall to date, the United States is mopping its brow in its warmest year on record, NOAA said.
