WASHINGTON, April 23 (UPI) -- Intel has topped a U.S. Environmental Protection Agency list of the top 50 "green-powered" organizations using clean and renewable electricity, the agency said.

The computer-chip maker led the listing of Green Power Partnership organizations voluntarily using clean, renewable electricity from resources such as solar, wind and low-impact hydropower, an EPA release said Monday.

Kohl's Department Stores and Microsoft Corp. followed Intel as users of green power, it said.

The top 50 program partners are using more than 15 billion kilowatt-hours of green power annually, the agency said.

"We applaud all of our Green Power Partners for their use of clean, renewable energy. For the first time, each of the Top 50 partners is using more than 100 million kilowatt-hours of green power annually," EPA Administrator Lisa P. Jackson said.

"Their actions help to reduce harmful carbon pollution that threatens the health of our planet and the air we breathe, and mark another step toward a new era of clean, innovative American energy."

Intel, which has ranked number one on the list since 2008, annually uses more than 2.5 billion kWh of green power, or 88 percent of the company's nationwide electricity use, the EPA said.
