Arrest made in massive China hacking case

BEIJING, March 26 (UPI) -- Police in China say they've arrested a man suspected of stealing and then leaking personal information belonging to more than 6 million computer users.

In what officials said is the biggest hacking case in the country's Internet history, the man -- identified only by the surname Zeng -- is in custody on charges of illegal acquisition of computer data, ZDNet.com reported Monday.

The leak occurred Dec. 21, 2011, when the China Software Developer Network was hacked into.

The hack exposed user names, passwords and e-mail addresses for online shopping, gaming, social networking and even financial service Web sites, authorities said.

Most of the leaked data dated from July 2009 to July 2010, indicating the CSDN server was hacked before July 2010, the Shanghai Daily reported.

Zeng was arrested in February in Wenzhou, in east China's Zhejiang Province, following an investigation.

After the hacking, authorities said the developers network had poorly secured its database.
