HALIFAX, Nova Scotia, Feb. 18 (UPI) -- A fishing group says a possible virus outbreak on a salmon farm in eastern Canada is a wakeup call about the risks of large-scale fish farming.
The salmon farm owned by Cooke Aquaculture in Nova Scotia was quarantined this week, the Canadian Broadcasting Corp. reported Saturday. While the diagnosis has not been confirmed, preliminary findings suggest the fish suffer from infectious salmon anemia, an incurable viral infection.
The company and Nova Scotia officials would not say which Cooke facility was quarantined.
Mayday-Shelburne County, a coalition of fishermen and local residents in the county at the southern tip of Nova Scotia, has been lobbying against a proposed expansion of Cooke salmon farms in the area.
"This disease has happened all over the world where farms are heavily stocked, farms close together, and this is what the Nova Scotia government is proposing for our coastline," said Sindy Horncastle, an area resident who heads the group.
