Contaminated water in Japan reactor pits

TOKYO, Jan. 20 (UPI) -- Water contaminated with relatively high levels of radiation was found in work pits at two reactors at Japan's damaged Fukushima nuclear plant, officials said.

Tokyo Electric Power Co., operator of the plant damaged in the March earthquake and tsunami, said the pits are close to trenches where highly contaminated water has accumulated and water from the trenches possible overflowed into the pits.

It is unlikely any water made its way into the ocean, Tepco said Thursday.

About 500 tons of water was found in the pit of the No. 2 reactor while about 600 tons was discovered at the No. 3 reactor pit, the Asahi Shimbun reported.
