Mystery hummingbird spotted in Illinois

OAK PARK, Ill., Nov. 28 (UPI) -- Bird watchers are flocking to Oak Park, Ill., to catch a glimpse of a mysterious green-and-white hummingbird never before seen in Illinois, researchers said.

The Field Museum said it will try to conduct DNA testing of the bird's droppings to determine if it's a broad-tailed hummingbird, which breeds in the Rocky Mountains and goes south for the winter, or a hybrid of two different hummingbird species, ChicagoWildlifeNews.com reported Monday.

Sheri Williamson, author of the Peterson Field Guide to Hummingbirds of North America, said the Field Museum's research could explain a great deal about the evolution of hummingbirds.

The mystery hummingbird was first spotted last week outside the home of Eric Gyllenhaal, who said more than 120 people had visited his home for a chance to see the bird.
