DEVON, England, Oct. 25 (UPI) -- A British man has gone "bionic" by being the first patient to have a smartphone dock built into his prosthetic arm, doctors said.
Trevor Prideaux of Somerset, born without his left arm, said he used to have to balance the smartphone on his prosthetic arm or put it on a flat surface to use it, The Daily Telegraph reported Tuesday.
But with the help of medical experts and technicians at cellphone maker Nokia, Prideaux can now text and call easily from the phone docked into a special receptacle in his fiberglass prosthetic arm.
A phone-shaped cradle in the skin-colored limb holds his Nokia phone, allowing him to make and take calls with just one hand.
"The phone slots smoothly and securely within my limb and is easily removable, when required," Prideaux said. "I think this would help a lot of people with prosthetic arms -- especially those who were not born with the disability."
"Now when I get call I can either hold my arm up to my ear or put it on speaker phone," he said. "I can also take it out if I need to. Texting is also much easier and a lot safer.
