High-tech camera 'lie detector' tested

BRADFORD, England, Sept. 13 (UPI) -- A new high-tech camera system using video and thermal imaging can detect lies just be watching a talking person's face, British scientists say.

The system, developed by researchers from the universities of Bradford and Aberystwyth in conjunction with the U.K. Border Agency, could be a powerful tool for security services, the BBC reported Tuesday.

Researchers said emotions are unconsciously revealed by subtle changes of expression and variation of blood flow to the skin, all of which the new system, using computer algorithms, can detect.

"We bring together all this well-established work on expressions, these recent developments in thermal imaging, techniques for image tracking of subjects and our new algorithms into one operational system," Hassan Ugail of Bradford University said.

The system has been tested on willing volunteers, but there are plans to deploy the equipment at a British airport later this year, where the algorithms can be tested against the verdicts of experienced immigration officers, the BBC said.
