HYDERABAD, India, Aug. 19 (UPI) -- India's president awarded the prestigious Fields Medal to young mathematicians from France, Israel and Switzerland at a ceremony in Hyderabad.

Indian President Shrimati Pratibha Patil awarded the medal for outstanding achievement in mathematics by scholars less than 40 years of age to Israeli Professor Elon Lindenstrauss of the Einstein Institute of Mathematics at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem, Ngo Bao Chau of Universite Paris-Sud in Orsay, France, Stanislav Smirnov of the University of Geneva, Switzerland, and Cedric Villani of the Henri Poincare Institute in Paris.

Lindenstrauss was the first Israeli to receive the coveted medal, Israeli media reports said.

The prize is given every four years by the International Congress of Mathematicians, which is conducting its quadrennial meeting in India.

The Fields Medal is named for Professor J.C. Fields, a mathematician at the University of Toronto who was secretary of the 1924 International Congress of Mathematicians and donated the funds to establish the medal.
