WASHINGTON, June 21 (UPI) -- The U.S. Food and Drug Administration is warning consumers about a possibly harmful product sold on the Internet as "Generic Tamiflu,"
The FDA said tests have shown the product does not contain Tamiflu's active ingredient, oseltamivir, but does include cloxacillin, an ingredient in the same class of antibiotics as penicillin.
Officials said people allergic or sensitive to penicillin products are at risk of experiencing similar and potentially life-threatening reactions from cloxacillin.
The officials said there is no FDA-approved generic drug for the prescription product Tamiflu.
FDA investigators said they purchased the fraudulent "Generic Tamiflu" without a prescription from a Web site claiming to be an online drugstore. But the fraudulent version is also likely to be found for sale on other Web sites, officials said.
